Earlier in March our women celebrated International Women’s Day with special events for the women and children, games, a march through their slums and so on. They used it as an opportunity to advocate against dowery and early marriage too. Recently we have opened two more libraries in schools in Dhaka and plan to open libraries in every school as soon as we can. The libraries don’t look like much - locked cabinets filled with books. But the mothers can borrow them for themselves and children and there are extended hours in the school for story and reading times for the students and neighbourhood. It is unlikely that any of the women had ever been to a library but once they learned the concept they knew they needed one!
